Candle Safety & Maintenance

As with all Candles, McLay & McLay are no different, the first burn is the most important. When lit for the first time they should burn roughly one hour per your candle diameter – so if you have a 3-inch diameter glass you would burn it for a maximum of 3 hours. If the wax is not allowed to liquefy or to melt from edge to edge of the jar or glass, it will create a “memory ring,” especially if this is the first time the candle is lit. Once a candle has this “memory ring,” it will continue to tunnel and burn that way for the life of the candle. Each time you burn the Candle allow it to burn again from edge to edge to prevent memory rings.

  • Keep the wick trimmed to the proper length at all times. Keeping your candle’s wick trimmed helps it burn more cleanly and efficiently. When wick trimming, you should always extinguish the flame, let the candle cool for two hours, and trim the wick to 4-5mm. We suggest trimming the wick every 4 hours of burn time. If you see any waste in the candle please extinguish the flame and let it cool, then using a teaspoon remove any waste, this could be from a match when lighting or from trimming the Wick.

  • Use a wick trimmer for a nice clean cut, this will help with any trimmings falling back into your candles keeping them cleaner.

  • No candle should be allowed to burn for longer than 4 hours allowed to cool for 2 hours then the Wicks trimmed before you relight.

  • For Safety’s Sake always burn candles well away from drafts, other heat sources, and anything flammable. Ensure your candles are nowhere near a water source either direct contact or splashing as the water can cause a dangerous reaction with the wax. Make sure burning candles are out of reach of children and pets.

  • Never leave a burning candle unattended.

  • Follow the Half Inch Rule and discontinue the use of a candle when half an inch of wax remains at the bottom of the jar. This will prevent possible heat damage to the counter/surface or the candle container itself. The glass can get hot on the bottom as the flame nears the base of the jar and most of the wax has been consumed.
